Our Journey

WhatYouEat.io was born from the realization that navigating the vast landscape of food options can be overwhelming. We wanted to create a simple, easy-to-use platform that helps people make better decisions about their diets. That's when we turned to the USDA SR 28 database, an extensive list of over 7,000 foods.

The Curation Process

We meticulously curated a list of slightly more than 1,000 foods from the initial USDA SR 28 database. Our focus was to include foods that were:

  • As close to their natural state as possible (raw, unsalted, etc.)
  • Rich in nutritional data
  • Unprocessed and without ingredients
  • Easily identifiable on a shopping list

We opted to exclude meals and complex food combinations, like prepared lasagna, in favor of simpler, more standardized ingredients, such as bread. This approach ensures that the information we provide is accurate and relevant, making it easier for you to make informed choices about your diet.
